The 30s in the 70s
The 70s saw a wave of 30s nostalgia, largely spawned by the success of Bonnie & Clyde (1967), that manifested itself in film, fashion and music. The 30s throwback can largely be explained as a cyclical nostalgia generated by a certain proximity to a given era, the aughts seemed tied to the 70s in the same way the 80s were nostalgic for the 50s/60s and so-on. Further, the 60s/70s counter-culture had an outlaw obsession that led to a succesful boom of Revisionist Westerns, similarly, the 30s gangster was reinvented as hippy-come-outlaw. In any case, the 70s saw many A-list Depression era period pieces like The Sting, Paper Moon, Thieves Like Us, Hard Times, Emperor of the North, Sounder, etc. Since this is Movienight I'll avoid those and stick to cheapies, exploitation and Corman titles.
