What more can be said? Fantastic opening 20 and closing 20 minutes. Jon Voight is incredible. Lots of lousy bit parts . . . epic closing shot. Tough and lean.
I think they should have done without any female characters period, they are pretty superfluous here.
Considering there are about 15 speaking roles, only 2 of these are women, and only 3 roles in the film are any good - statistically speaking the women are probably gonna be lame roles/actors regardless of any writer or director's intention. Either way, if one wants to read identity politics into any film about 99 % would probably be classified as sexist, at least according to Laura Mulvey.
But I also feel that one shouldn't take the cast of characters in a film as being a representative microcosm of reality or an attempt thereof. Shitty behavior or representation in a film or novel is representative only of that character - and that character isn't necessarily some sort of compass or legend for the filmmaker's ideas or opinions. I think I'd have to be privy to the intentions of everyone involved.
