Bite-Sized Yakuza Chunks: Suzujki, Fukasaku & Kitano
Yakuza films started out as morality plays where the protagonist's ninkyo, their honor, was a greater stake than their life. This genre paradigm would see some radical shifts brought about by these three auteurs. Seijen Suzuki's irreverence, Kinji Fukasaku's politically loaded disdain for hypocrisy and Takeshi Kitano's post-modern, arthouse approaches advanced new mutations in the Japanese gangster film - so lets watch 'em.
