I thought this was pretty cool. While most of the whites were broad caricatures of good ole boys I still feel the movie had enough true grit to float it. Plus a stand-out scene with a sixteen year hussy talkin' about sex in the graveyard. Portier is a stand up badass . . . some great slaps too.
that 16 year old sex confession was so intense and awesome it warped the whole pacing of the film. but that just had to let that scene run on!! it was too good to cut. the whole film is a winner but that sscene sealed the deal: this film is an A#1. great acting by whoever she was...
I think her boobs were bigger than sixteen, unless they just drink way too much milk in the south. I had a love/hate with Poitier-- I think he got a little extra theatrical at times when his character didn't necessarily call for it (grand gesturing arms). Also I think Columbo would have done a much better job of unraveling the case. That aside, Poitier is still a total hero.
Portier is definitely a stage act-y kinda guy. I agree. Boobs are cooler in the South . . . because they lie their bowdies on cold marble headstones all the time.
I figured it had totally been her brother who knocked her up so they were blaming it on Oates. My vision of the South is even more demented than this one, it has been deformed by too many movies.

ReplyDeletebest slaps since Chinatown! (Though Chinatown was probably after this)
